Chapter 5: The 5-week improvement plan

Now that you understand where you are on the WPM ladder, it's time to implement a structured approach to climb higher. This 5-week plan is designed to systematically improve your typing skills regardless of your starting point.

Each week focuses on specific skill development while building upon previous progress. The plan includes daily exercises that gradually increase in complexity and speed requirements. For maximum benefit, complete each day's exercises in sequence.

How to use this plan

Before diving in, here are some guidelines to get the most from this program:

  1. Consistency matters more than duration. A daily 30-minute practice session is more effective than a 3-hour marathon once a week.

  2. Complete the exercises in order. Each day's activities build upon skills developed in previous sessions.

  3. Focus on accuracy first. Only increase speed when you can complete exercises with at least 95% accuracy.

  4. Track your progress. Use the templates in Appendix B to record your daily results and monitor improvement.

  5. Adapt based on your starting level. If you're already above 60 WPM, you might progress through the early weeks more quickly—but don't skip them entirely, as they establish important foundations.

Let's begin the transformation of your typing abilities.

Week 1: Building foundations

The first week focuses on establishing proper technique and touch typing fundamentals. Even if you're an experienced typist, these exercises will help identify and correct inefficient habits.

Adapting the plan to your level

While this 5-week plan works for most typists, you may need to adjust based on your starting point:

For beginners (under 30 WPM)

  • Spend more time on Weeks 1 and 2
  • Focus primarily on accuracy before pushing speed
  • Consider extending the plan to 6-7 weeks

For intermediate typists (30-60 WPM)

  • The plan works well as structured
  • Pay particular attention to the accuracy focus in Week 2
  • Ensure proper technique before pushing speed in Week 3

For advanced typists (60+ WPM)

  • You may progress through Weeks 1-3 more quickly
  • Spend more time on Weeks 4 and 5
  • Focus on specialized content relevant to your work

Remember that improvement is not always linear. You may experience rapid gains followed by plateaus. Trust the process and maintain consistent practice.

With this 5-week plan complete, you now have a structured path to dramatically improve your typing skills. In the next chapter, I'll explore daily practice routines that will help you maintain and continue developing your skills beyond this initial improvement phase.
